We are helping the Danish Environmental Protection Agency to develop the Waste Data System, a national database used to register waste data for around 15 million tons of waste annually.

Four-year framework agreement

Miljøstyrelsen, otherwise known as the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, is an organisation administering the legislation on environmental protection. At the centre of their work is ensuring and safeguarding the good living conditions for humans, animals, and nature alike. They do this by administering the laws ensuring clean air, water, and soil.

For this, Miljøstyrelsen have created a digital solution called the Waste Data System – developed and maintained by Commentor. The Waste Data System is a national database used to register waste data or around 15 million tons of waste annually. Following new Danish legislation – the Waste Data System was put to tender for a four-year framework agreement, which Commentor won.

Focus on agility and future-proofing

The Waste Data System lays the foundation for the vital environmental work of many companies. Not only is it used by Danish municipalities to access data pertaining to waste types and their quantities, but the system also supports the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which has an active obligation to provide information and instruction on how to ensure green production, and a clean environment. In the spirit of future-proofing, Commentor developed the idea of a data bank that supports a circular economy. The idea behind this is to collect information throughout the entire process – from production to waste – documenting and providing insights into the life cycle of various waste materials such as plastics, heavy metals, and scrap cars, to name a few.

Commentor has been maintaining the system since May 2020, and has already handled the first updates by forwarding a solution based on the legislative requirements which lead to accommodating new legislation regarding the handling of hazardous waste. Commentor has been working proactively with the Danish EPA in optimising their processes, automating tasks, and offering solutions which create more time for employees to focus on other valuable tasks.

User-friendliness was at the forefront of the Waste Data Management optimisation process. With UX optimisations came better and more intuitive workflows for users, both internally at the Danish EPA, as well as the companies reporting their waste data. The IT infrastructure behind the Waste Data System is located at the Danish State IT, where it is being operated and serviced. Commentor holds the responsibility of deployment on all environments and handling the support and maintenance of the Waste Data System.
