A modern cloud-based data platform for intelligent business services

To optimise its operations, Ponsse had to merge its data, otherwise siloed in a complex network of forest machinery, into a modern cloud-based data platform, enabling the company to store, unify, share and apply an ever-growing amount of data. Ponsse’s data platform also improves reporting, data archiving and forecasting, laying the foundation for data-driven business services such as predictive maintenance.

Solita built the new data platform by combining Microsoft Azure cloud technology for creating data-intensive end-to-end services, Snowflake for data warehousing and uniting siloed data, and Agile Data Engine for automating cloud data warehousing and simplifying the addition of new data sources. APIs were built to facilitate the use of – and compatibility with – external interfaces. Modern MuleSoft API management and integrations enable the combination of sensor data from the machines, utilisation data of each individual machine, service data and customer data.

Edge computing solutions for fleet data stream

To be able to create new data-driven services to their customers, Ponsse provided a new Connectivity Unit to be installed in the forest machines for gathering fleet data. Ponsse sought Solita’s help to create a data management structure and a data stream solution for their next-generation Connectivity Unit for telematics. By combining the Connectivity Unit with Microsoft Azure’s edge computing technologies, Ponsse’s machines can temporarily store and process data without relying on a public cloud — ideal when operating without a reliable mobile internet connection. The solution also promises lower latency and a more efficient use of bandwidth and cloud infrastructure.

This system enables fleet owners and maintenance providers to access, monitor and analyse machine data flowing from the cloud, predict the maintenance need and thereby optimise servicing and minimise downtime. Ponsse can also use the data to create new and better servicing solutions.

It has been a great journey together with Ponsse to design and implement new cutting edge technologies like Azure Edge and IoT for collecting telematics data. Also the introduction of satellite connectivity has added an interesting twist into the project.
Working closely with Microsoft’s IoT and edge computing specialists, Solita has provided Ponsse with another successful cornerstone solution in data collection capabilities, helping reduce their global harvester downtime, while streamlining service and maintenance needs for operators and service providers.
In addition to development of MES application Solita has been participating to development of several Ponsse Service applications, enterprise architecture work and high-level business design.

Ponsse needed a new, flexible manufacturing execution system (MES) to keep designing and delivering customer-centric and customisable forest machinery. For this, the company required a customised solution for its MES modernisation.

Its new advanced MES enables Ponsse to effectively collect, systemise and analyse the data it gathers and use it to increase the company’s efficiency and product quality, as well as to develop new business services. Other benefits include:
