Smooth enterprise transition: Managing and orchestrating the IT landscape in a multi-phase transformation

Case Cargotec

When a company goes through a major transformation, managing IT separation, enterprise architecture, and business continuity with a tight timeline can be a major challenge. Cargotec Corporation (nowadays Hiab Corporation) underwent such a major change in 2024-2025. As a part of IM Separation Management Office, Solita supported the company in ensuring a controlled, secure, and efficient transition in selected subdomains.

Hiab (former Cargotec) provides load handling solutions globally. In April 2023 (as Cargotec), the company announced its plan to separate its businesses Kalmar and Hiab into two world-leading standalone companies. In addition, according to Cargotec’s Board of Directors decision that company’s third business area MacGregor would not be part of the company portfolio in the future, Cargotec announced the sale of MacGregor in November 2024 (the transaction was closed in July 2025).

As a final step of the company transformation, as per the AGM 2025 decision, the name of the company changed to Hiab Corporation in March 2025. Hiab started its independent listed company journey on Nasdaq Helsinki on 1 April 2025.

Supporting a global business in a major transformation

This ambitious program took place within an intense timeframe between 2023-2025, with each separation needing to be completed against a timeline of 16 vs. 12 months. The scope was massive, requiring careful management and planning of IT applications and their services, licensing, hosting, agreements, and governance structures. Ensuring a seamless transition for all applications and their services was a complex challenge, requiring clear ownership, and compliance oversight.

Enterprise design to ensure successful change

Solita experts joined the Cargotec separation program, bringing project management expertise into enterprise design and transformation management in selected areas. Our contributions included:

  • Project management leading to successful change management: Implementing needed changes to the IT landscape based on the planned enterprise architecture.
  • Landscape mapping & separation: Ensuring the controlled separation of shared services, applications, data, and processes in selected subdomains while minimising disruptions.
  • Integration services expertise: Deep expertise in integration architecture and separation development.
  • Cutover and transition services: Providing continuous support, also outside office hours.

Efficient execution in a high-stakes environment

Transforming a global enterprise at this scale required agility, precision, and collaboration. Solita team members worked as part of the extended Cargotec team, and helped to navigate the challenges of IT separation, supplier realignment, and enterprise planning.

“One of the key things for success was the diverse skill set of our team: we had experienced experts specializing in hosting, project management and integration development. We were able to accomplish a vast amount of work within a very demanding timeline. Working as part of the team supporting the transformation of companies of this size was a remarkable achievement”, says Marko Suojasto, Account Executive from Solita

“Solita’s support in this major transformation was truly valuable. Our application and service portfolio was extensive and complex, and everything had to be resolved within a tight schedule to keep the demerger process on track”, Tapani Koskinen, heading Enterprise Architecture at former Cargotec.
