1. No reason to migrate
If saving money is the only reason to start a cloud migration, think again. You don’t necessarily save money by using the cloud, but by how you use the cloud; so make sure you have strategic reasons to start the migration.
2. No business case
Make sure your reasons include business elements. Cloud migration has to help your business. This can mean anything, for example, “being able to use data more easily”, “connecting data easily via an API” or “keeping data up to date for longer”; you name it.
3. No governance
No clear governance means that you are exposing yourself to major risks: you are not sure that configured security controls are working as intended. You have no visibility to your cloud deployments, for example. It still happens too often that an employee pays the cloud costs with their personal credit card and then reimburses it from the employer. As soon as this person leaves the company and the invoices are no longer paid, the cloud application comes to a standstill. Catastrophe strikes!
4. No technical standard to help
Cloud migration is a complicated and extensive process that you have to go through. Fortunately, there are frameworks around governing the cloud adaptation that creates a solid base to start your migration from. Available solutions from Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure like Landing Zones, ease the transition. Use them. They’ll make your life easier.
5. No control over the amount of work
