Heart Hospital

When data helps save hearts

Case Sydänsairaala Data helps save lives

Heart Hospital (Sydänsairaala), a Finnish hospital network specialising in cardiac care, modernised its data-driven management with the help of Solita. The outdated reporting system was replaced with a modern data platform that enables faster development and provides near real-time data on the effectiveness of treatments — helping physicians to make better treatment decisions.

Inflexible system slowed down development and data utilisation

The award-winning Heart Hospital, staffed by over 700 professionals, is renowned for its outstanding performance, consistently using data to drive operational development and ensure high-quality care. However, by 2022, the hospital’s knowledge management was based on a SAS-based data warehouse that had reached the end of its life cycle.

Creating new reports was laborious and time-consuming, and maintaining existing ones required constant effort. While the need for new ways to utilise data grew, technical debt and the task list grew uncontrollably. It was clear that a strategic change was needed.

Speed and impact with a modern data platform and agile development

The Heart Hospital chose Solita as its partner to implement an ambitious modernisation of its data capabilities. We designed and built a modern, Microsoft Azure-based data lake solution using Solita’s Agile Data Engine (ADE) tool. The data lake solution was named Sydäntietoallas (Heart Data Lake).

One of the most significant results emerged from the implementation of impact reporting, envisioned and initiated by Heart Hospital, made possible by Solitans’ strong IT expertise. The Tableau dashboards developed in collaboration with Heart Hospital’s medical leadership bring together clinical metrics and patient experiences, making the effectiveness of care visible and measurable in physicians’ daily work.

“Our vision was clear: we wanted to make measuring the effectiveness of treatment part of everyday management and clinical work”, says Markku Eskola, Medical Director, Heart Hospital and continues:

The goal wasn’t just to create new reports, but to give our professionals a tool that genuinely helps them make better treatment decisions. Solita’s team helped us implement this vision in a practical, interactive, and professional manner.

The concrete and direct impact on patient care made this project a particularly rewarding and motivating experience for Solitans.

This is one of the first times in my career that our work has felt truly meaningful. We aren’t just transferring data. We know that this solution helps doctors make better decisions and improve people’s health.

Award-winning impact and better treatment decisions

The collaboration quickly produced concrete and measurable results. The new data platform is technically modern, and more cost-effective and flexible than before. The development of new reports has accelerated significantly, and maintenance is easier thanks to clear documentation.

However, the greatest value has been created at the operational level. With the help of impact reports, the Heart Hospital has been able to select the most effective treatments for its patients, improve treatment outcomes, and even save lives.

Heart Hospital was awarded the Impact of the Year 2025 prize in recognition of the results of its development efforts and this collaboration. According to the jury, the solution has brought concrete, measurable benefits:

  • Better treatment results: LDL cholesterol targets are now being achieved significantly more often than before.

  • More effective medication: More than 70% of patients receive medication in accordance with heart failure treatment recommendations.

  • Fewer hospital stays: Better treatment has reduced the number of patients being readmitted to hospital.

For Solitans, the greatest reward has been seeing the concrete impact of their work.

It has been eye-opening to see how data can influence treatment almost in real time. Instead of analysing past events, we can now see when a patient’s values start to improve. Knowing that your code can play a part in preventing the next heart attack is extremely motivating.

Partnership has been the key to success. From the very beginning, close collaboration ensured that the development progressed in the right direction and addressed genuine needs.

Previously, our to-do list for data-driven management was growing uncontrollably. Through this collaboration, we have managed to change course and shift from reactive work to genuinely developing something new.

In the future, technology and data will work even more closely to support medicine, helping professionals focus their expertise where it delivers the most value to the patient.
