New Driver Guidance makes paper printouts obsolete

Before a train leaves, the driver needs up-to-date information about timetables, train equipment, track maintenance and other exceptional conditions, for example. While the train is moving, there must be a way to convey information about possible changes to even a large group of drivers as quickly as possible.

Case Solita and Fintraffic Railway: New Driver Guidance makes paper printouts obsolete

We implemented a completely new kind of a driver guidance system Fintraffic Railway. With this system, all drivers have up-to-date information easily available, and bringing paper printouts to the driver’s cab will be history.

Communication between drivers and traffic control will be more efficient

Before their shift, each train driver checks the train and the details of their shift and whether there are any changes. This used to be done with a paper printout the driver collected and brought to the cab. Over 2000 printouts were needed in the whole country each day. When the train is running, it is also possible that information about sudden changes arrives and must be conveyed to the drivers quickly. Communication between drivers and traffic control has been usually carried out by phone, for example. This requires a lot of manual work, and getting important information to many drivers at once is slow. Fintraffic Railway wanted to speed up communication and conveying information to the drivers.

We implemented a driver guidance system, which makes it possible to convey information to the drivers electronically and in real time.

Important information straight to Driver Guidance in real time

We implemented a driver guidance system, which makes it possible to convey information to the drivers electronically and in real time. In practice, the Driver Guidance system means that there is tablet computer in each locomotive, and the driver receives timetables and other necessary information through it without the need for paper printouts. By using it, the driver receives information about changes in weather conditions or damage to the track immediately, which makes it possible to react quicker. It also increases safety on tracks.

Makes everyday work easier, saves time and money

Driver Guidance improves communication between drivers and traffic control. It is a flexible and diverse tool which makes the everyday work of each participant more efficient. The design of Driver Guidance puts especial emphasis on the ease of use and a good user experience, and it has been developed in close cooperation with the drivers. Driver Guidance also steers drivers towards an economic driving style, which offers considerable energy and cost saving opportunities to train operators.

Results

  • Saves time and money by replacing manual work and paper printouts.

  • Real-time information easily accessible for everyone.

  • Improves communication between drivers and traffic control.

  • Quicker reactions to changes.

  • Improved track safety.

  • Supports economic driving style and saving energy.
