Meet our People of Solita. We have over 2100 employees in various locations with different skills and backgrounds – each with a story to share about what they do and what inspires them. This is the story of Jon Hermansson, who works as a Java Backend Developer and People Lead at Solita in Stockholm. He has been part of Solita for two and a half years.

Building solutions that make everyday work easier

I’m a consultant at heart. In my daily work, I’m a Java Backend Developer, but that title doesn’t really cover everything. These days, being a developer also means working with architecture, design, DevOps, and discussing requirements closely with stakeholders.

I spend most of my time at a client site, currently working within the procure-to-pay domain. In simple terms, we automate processes around supplier contracts, purchase orders and invoices. The goal is to remove unnecessary manual work and make sure the right things happen at the right time.

For me, it’s important not just to receive a requirement, build it and move on. I want to understand how the solution is actually used and what impact it has on the business. When you see that something you’ve built makes someone’s workday easier or more efficient, that’s when it becomes meaningful.

Balancing customer work and people leadership

I split my time between customer work and my role as a People Lead, with customer assignments typically taking up a bigger portion of my time. Both parts matter to me, but the People Lead role is especially important.

As a People Lead, I support and coach a team of eleven people. My responsibility isn’t only to check in and have conversations, but to help people grow, both technically and as consultants. I see myself as a bridge between the individual and the company. Together with sales, I try to ensure that people get assignments that match their strengths and the direction they want to develop.

For me, impact in this role means that my team members feel comfortable, challenged in the right way and supported in their growth. Work should be demanding enough to help you develop, but not so overwhelming that it drains you. When people feel that balance, they usually thrive.

Growing through assignments and new technologies

Consulting naturally pushes you to keep learning. The assignments you take on shape your development. During my time at Solita, I’ve continued to evolve both technically and in my leadership role.

Technically, I’ve worked with different technologies and deepened my backend expertise. There’s also a strong focus on AI at Solita, and even if it’s not always part of my daily assignment, it’s an area I’ve learned a lot about recently. While you are encouraged to learn, the time available during working hours is limited. I’m curious by nature, so I also learn on my own time, and there are always colleagues to discuss ideas with.

The People Lead role also offers constant development opportunities. The level of engagement changes over time, and every new situation teaches you something about communication, responsibility and how to support others in the best way.

A warm and welcoming culture

What stood out to me when I joined Solita was the atmosphere. It genuinely feels warm and welcoming. People are open, helpful and easy to approach.

If you have a question, no matter how small, someone will take the time to help, and they’ll do it with an honest smile. There’s very little prestige. No one tries to prove they are better than someone else. We share knowledge freely, whether it’s during a project discussion or a casual lunch conversation.

I usually work four days a week at the client’s office and at least one day at our own Stockholm office. I enjoy being at the office. It’s a place where you meet colleagues, exchange ideas and feel part of a work community.

Our values (caring, passion, courage and easy-going) are visible in everyday life. You’re encouraged to try new things, give presentations, explore new areas like AI and grow beyond your comfort zone. At the same time, people genuinely care about each other’s well-being.

Curiosity and humility as drivers of growth

To succeed at Solita, I think it helps if you enjoy helping others and sharing knowledge. You don’t have to be the most outspoken person in the room, but you need to be willing to communicate and collaborate.

Curiosity is also essential. Technology evolves quickly, and you need to be interested in learning new things. At the same time, you need a certain humility; an understanding that there are many perspectives and that discussions are about finding the best solution, not about being right.

Finding balance outside of work

Outside of work, I try to create balance. I work out regularly and recently started swimming early in the morning once a week. That hour before the day begins has become my time alone, a small pocket of calm before everything starts.

I have two children, 17 and 19 years old, and family life still plays a big role. I also enjoy spending time in nature, whether it’s skiing, walking in the woods or simply being outdoors.

At our summer house in Dalarna, I like to work with my hands. I’ve taken carpentry classes and enjoy building small pieces of furniture. It’s very different from writing code. After a day of solving technical problems, it’s refreshing to create something physical and tangible.

One thing I try to remind myself of daily isn’t to stress about things I can’t control. If I can’t influence the situation, it’s better to focus my energy on what I actually can affect. That mindset helps me stay balanced, both at work and outside of it.
