In today’s tech-driven world, cloud architecture is increasingly vital as more companies migrate to the cloud. Adrian’s journey from Data Engineer to Cloud Architect offers a glimpse into how this transition can unfold organically.

Why shift to cloud?

Adrian began his career in our Data Academy, focusing on data engineering. However, his interest shifted as he realised that cloud technology is foundational to most modern IT projects.

“Cloud is the base of anything we work on these days,” Adrian says, noting that his initial data engineering project naturally evolved into a cloud-focused role. This gradual shift revealed that cloud architecture, with its dynamic and varied challenges, aligned more closely with his interests than the tasks often associated with data engineering.

Becoming a Cloud Architect

Adrian’s path to cloud architecture was less about formal training and more about gaining hands-on experience.

“Most people start as cloud engineers and, as they gain more experience, naturally progress into the Cloud Architect role,” he explains.

While he has considered certifications, Adrian emphasises that practical experience is the key to mastering cloud architecture.

A significant part of his development has been the support he received from Solitans. Regular discussions with his People Lead helped guide his transition from cloud engineer to architect. Our culture emphasises hands-on experience and natural growth, allowing Adrian to take on more complex cloud-related tasks over time.

In his current role, Adrian has taken on more cloud-related responsibilities, particularly in decision-making for the data platform his team is developing. This experience has been crucial in his development as a cloud architect, preparing him for the broader, strategic responsibilities the role entails.

Cloud Architect vs. Cloud Engineer

Adrian distinguishes between the roles of a Cloud Engineer and a Cloud Architect. Cloud Engineers focus on implementing specific parts of cloud infrastructure, such as managing CI/CD pipelines and ensuring observability. In contrast, Cloud Architects design the overall cloud architecture, considering business requirements, security, and cost optimisation.

“The cloud architect is the one who says, ‘We’re going to do things like this,'” Adrian explains, highlighting the architect’s role in shaping the strategic direction of cloud projects.
